/The Unix-Like Webring

The Linux penguin mascot, Tux. The Free BSD daemon mascot, a little cartoony red demon holding a golden pitchfork and green tennis shoes, looking rather meek. The Serenity OS logo, a swirl of red and black down the middle with three black spots on the red side that go from big, medium, to small. It's meant to resemble a ladybug. The Open BSD logo and mascot Puffy, a cartoony yellow pufferfish puffing up with its body inflated with its venomous spikes poking out and its lips pursed to keep the air in. Below Puffy reads 'Open' in yellow italics then 'BSD' in red. The Net BSD logo, a simple vector of a flag with a gray pole and yellow cloth waving in the air. Text reads 'Net BSD'.

user@hostname:~$ man unixwebring

This is the Unix-Like Webring. This webring connects users who are using FOSS [Free and Open Source] Unix-Like operating systems. This includes operating systems like the BSD, Linux families or stand-alone operating systems like Serenity OS. You can be using Linux on your Desktop, for a firewall, for servers, in a virtual machine, for any purpose at all!

/What is a Unix-Like Operating System?

Unix-Like operating systems, also known as *nix, *NIX, & UN*x, are operatng systems that behave in a similar manner to Unix, and follow some of its philosophies. This webring specifically is focused on Free and Open Source , GPL liscensed , or FreeBSD licensed (and so forth) operating systems with little to no or minor proprietary elements.

/What is a webring?

A webring, most common during the 90's and 2000's, is something used to link websites with similar interests together to find them more easily. As long as you have a website, you can join a webring! You have to actually have it on your site for it to work.

/Who can join?

Anyone using and/or has used a foss unix-like operating system (as a desktop, in a virtual machine, on a mobile device, on a server, on a steamdeck, etc!) who has a website.

OS Unix-Like? License? Can you join?
Mac OS Yes Commerical, proprietary No
OpenSUSE Yes GPL Yes
Microsoft Windows No Proprietary No

/Learn about Unix-Likes!

Stumbled across here and wanting to know more about what a *NIX operating system is, or even set one up yourself? *NIX user looking for tips? Look no further, come to This page. It may seem daunting, the prospect of learning about a different operating system, especially as someone who has only used Microsoft Windows for years! But as you can see, the *NIX-world is beautiful and vast! With a plethora of options and paths you can take, if you ever do start using it, you'll never look back. I think Distro-Watch is a rather fun site for exploring the multitude of BSD's and Linux distributions.

The Open SUSE Logo, a green smiling chameleon with 'Open SUSE' underneath. The Pop! OS logo, a white P with an exclamation point on a light blue background. An older KDE logo. There is a white 'K' with a white gear behind it on a gradient dark blue background, intended to look like plastic. An older Fedora OS logo. A curved, vaguely leaf shaped dark blue blob with a white infinity symbol on top. Where the infinities connect, the white turns into light blue. The Nix OS logo, many interweaving light and dark blue branches with a little gray hummingbird in the middle. The Debian logo, a splash of a dark red swirl. An older Ubuntu logo, a circle with various shades of orange divided into three segments. Each segment has a small circle in the middle. Cel shading is applied to make it look sbiny. The MX Linux logo, a simplistic drawing of two white mountain peaks in front of a half-circle. Connecting the two mountain peaks is an 'X' The Arch Linux Logo, a light blue 'A' stylized to have scratch marks in the sides and spikes. Instead of the line connecting either side of the letter 'A', it instead has a slightly rounded middle. Cel shading is applied to look crystalized. The Zorin OS logo. It is a blue cone with the pointed edge facing to the right. It's stylized to look like thick, dark blue glass, similar to a singular binocular. On the rounded end, there is a tilted 'Z' and on the pointed end, there is 'OS.' An older Slack ware logo, a giant black 'S' with white borders and an underline beneath it on a gradient grayish blue background, intended to look like a button. The Tails OS logo. White text reads 'Tails' with 'the amnesic incognito live system' beneath it, amnesic and live being bold. On the left side of the text, there is a simple drawing of a USB stick with a lock on its side. The background is purple. An older Linux Mint logo. It is a green curved vaguely leaf-like shape with thick white borders that stick out as long rectangles at either point, stylized to look like a crystal. In the middle is a white lowercase 'm', who's rightmost point curves beneath the m to the left and nearly touches the top of the curve.

A digital bust-shot drawing of Wikipedia's anime girl mascot 'Wikipe-tan.' She is smiling cheerily and looking at the viewer with her big eyes. Instead of her usual blue Wikipedia themed outfit Wikepe-tan has a minty green shirt with the Linux Mint logo on the left side of the chest. Wikipe-tan has light green hair with her language puzzle piece hair-clips are pale green and replaced with Linux Mint logos.
